Girona's shock 2-1 victory over Atlético Madrid in their La Liga clash on Sunday has continued their impressive run as dark horses for the title.

The Catalan side, who have been tipped to struggle this season, were well beaten by Real Sociedad at home earlier in the week but bounced back with a determined display against Atlético.

Their victory came after a controversial decision from the referee, who awarded Girona a penalty for handball and then missed it himself, allowing Atlético to take the lead.

But the visitors fought back and equalised through a stunning goal from Riqui Puig, who curled a shot into the top corner from just outside the box.

They then went on to win the game with a late header from Sergi Díez to secure all three points.

It was a remarkable comeback for Girona, who had already lost to Barcelona and Atletico earlier in the season.

Their victory has given them some much-needed momentum heading into the final months of the season, and could also help to lift their spirits ahead of the Copa del Rey final against Valencia on Wednesday.

Overall, it was another thrilling display from Girona, who continue to defy expectations and prove that they can compete with the best in Spain.
